Dell has created a datacentre-focused business unit that will concentrate on equipping cloud providers, hosting firms and telcos with the technology needed to build large-scale computing facilities.
The Datacentre Scalable Solutions (DSS) unit will form part of Dell’s wider Enterprise Solutions arm, and will – the company claims – be setup to help customers in these sectors scale up their operations quickly by using technology tailored to their specific IT needs.
As an example of this, Dell has cited organisations that may need access to thousands of additional servers in a short amount of time or run their operations on non-traditional operating systems.
Furthermore, DCS will also work to create a line of datacentre-related systems it plans to bring out later in 2015.
Ashley Gorakhpurwalla, vice-president and general manager for server solutions at Dell, said the aim of the business unit is to help customers rapidly respond to the growing demand for datacentre technologies.
“Dell Datacentre Scalable Solutions is a prime example of how Dell, as a private company, is able to be more nimble, make faster decisions and – most importantly – drive innovation on behalf of its customers,” said Gorakhpurwalla.
“While others in the IT industry have been focused on marketing hype or reducing capex costs only, we’ve created an operating model centered around flexibility. DSS is about understanding customers’ goals and enabling them to achieve those objectives by giving purpose-built solutions that are designed when and how they want it.”
The business unit will also augment the work of Dell’s existing Datacentre Solutions division, which was set up eight years ago to design and build offerings for the hyperscale datacentre market, the company explained in a statement.
“Today, there’s a growing market of businesses just below the hyperscale space in size that are increasingly expressing similar needs in how they buy and build datacentre capabilities,” it read.
“This segment is growing three times faster than the traditional x86 server market and represents a $6bn total addressable market,” the statement added.
