IT firm aims to close skills gap with technology training academy

Microsoft reseller Azzure IT has developed an academy to teach skills in development, customer support, consultancy and office-based sales.

The firm, which has been named by Microsoft as one of the top four providers of its software tools in the world, developed the Azzure Dynamics Academy to increase the IT skills of graduates through an apprenticeship scheme.

“IT is an industry that constantly needs more skills, so rather than be at the mercy of others, we thought the time was right to secure our future by investing in the next generation of IT specialists,” said Azzure IT’s managing director, Craig Such.

As well as ensuring graduates and apprentice-level applicants get the appropriate training to support Azzure IT’s need for talent, it hopes to offer opportunities to a diverse range of hopefuls.

Candidates are taken on throughout the year, and are given the opportunity to focus on skills they are most interested in, with programmes developed to suit them.

As well as work experience, the apprentices will gain recognised qualifications in MCTS, MCSA, MTA and MOS through the Microsoft Apprenticeship programme.

“We’re looking for talented people from a range of backgrounds and skillsets to join us, and not necessarily people who already have extensive knowledge in IT. We want bright, ambitious people with the desire and potential to develop a successful career,” said Such.

  • Focusing on crucial stages of a career in IT is the key to encouraging more women and girls to work in the sector.

Training candidates to match the skills shortage across the organisation will help to “future-proof” Azzure IT, as well as provide the skills needed for an ongoing career in IT.

The scheme provides applicants with training through different environments and techniques, including work experience at the firm, lessons both in a classroom and through the online Dynamics Learning Portal, as well as mentoring, and the firm is working closely with Microsoft to ensure the training provided is mixed.

“Being part of a growing company like Azzure IT is the perfect way to start my career. I’m being paid whilst following a clear, focused training scheme and getting valuable work experience along the way. It’s a great way to get established in a job that has real long-term opportunities,” said apprentice developer at the Azzure Dynamics Academy, Tom Brown.

Four students are currently enrolled on the scheme, with another starting soon. Azzure IT is working with local universities, schools and colleges to raise awareness surrounding IT careers and the importance of IT skills.
